CHS Construction students stand behind bookshelves being donated to students at Leroy Massey Elementary School

David Rogers’ construction classes recently traveled to local elementary schools to donate bookshelves to students. The construction classes build the bookshelves and paint them bright colors and the Chattooga County Literacy Council fills the shelves with books for local elementary students. This project began as a small donation of a couple of shelves and has grown into a larger project that provides shelves for many students. Elementary teachers identify students who will benefit from the books and they notify the Mrs. Sue Spivey, Literacy Council Director. Mrs. Spivey talks with Mr. Rogers about building the shelves and when they are complete high school students present elementary students with their new literacy shelves. When elementary students complete their first set of books they can return them for more books with their teacher. A Literacy Council Spokesperson stated, “The program is successful and the students are highly motivated to read all the books on their shelf so that they can turn them in for more challenging books. This program is an incentive to encourage young readers to expand their reading levels.”
