Chattooga Senior Shawnnee Laney placed 2nd in the nation at a recent Jobs for America’s Graduates competition. Laney traveled with the club to Washington, DC for a leadership conference. Students participate in various skills competitions as part of the conference. Shawnnee entered the math skills competition and came out with a second place win. When the Indian Lore asked her how she felt about winning such a high honor the humble Laney stated, “It’s just a math test.” JAG Advisor Kristy Colbert stated, “She is a bright student and I knew she would do great in the math skills competition. She competed against students from every state in the nation and she won 2nd place. This is a huge honor for Shawnnee and I am so proud of her work ethic.”
The test consisted of 85 questions that covered all areas of high school math from geometry and algebra to business math. Students had only one hour to complete the test and they could not use a calculator to work any of the problems. Shawnnee will graduate in May with the Class of 2017. After graduation she plans to continue to sharpen her skills by attending college. Congratulations Shawnnee, your CHS family is proud of you!
“When I first heard I couldn’t use a calculator I was very nervous, but when I started working the problems I just let what I know kick in and I finished feeling good about the outcome,” stated Laney.
