SMS 7th Grader Curtlon Bryan Places 2nd in Essay Contest

Summerville Middle School seventh grader, Curtlon Bryan, was named the second place winner of the District 1 Patriot’s Pen essay contest having advanced from being the local winner named by Post 6688 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The contest consisted of four levels. Bryan won at the local level and advanced to the second level. This was an achievement as the District 1 competition includes most of the counties in Northwest GA. The theme of this year’s essay was “What Freedom Means to Me” which required a typed submission of 300-400 words.
Ms. Gentry represented the VFW, and on Wednesday, March 2nd all students who participated in the local competition from SMS participated in a recognition ceremony complete with refreshments. Further, Curtlon was surprised with the announcement of his win and was given a cash award.
Each year the local post 6688 sponsors the Patriot’s Pen contest, and all schools may participate.
